What's a paddle game rating and why should you know yours?

If you've been in tournaments, WhatsApp groups or open training, you've probably heard phrases like:
"That man is a 3.5",
"That couple is at 4.0 fixed.",
"I'm 2.8 but I'm training to go up..."

But what do those numbers mean? Where do they come from? Why are they starting to be so important in clubs, tournaments and academies?

Welcome to the world ofpaddle rating: a system which, when well understood, improves the game experience for all.

What's the rating?

Rating is anumerical or categorical scale that classifies the level of a paddle player, based on its technique, tactics, physical condition, experience and results.
It is like a "personal ranking," but applied at the recreational and amateur level, not professional.

The objective is simple:ensuring balanced parties and fairer powers.

Where does this system come from?

The world's most well-known system is theNTRP(National Tennis Rating Program), which emerged in the United States for tennis. Today, many paddle clubs adapt that model, although there are also more specific proposals for this sport.

Some scales go from1.0 to 7.0(as in tennis), others use categories such as:
Beginners - Intermediate - Advanced - Competition - Pro,
and some mix both:"I'm 3.5 high intermediate.".

Why is it important to know your rating?

Best matches:
You avoid being frustrated or bored. You play with people of your own level or with similar goals.

Focus training:
You know what you're failing to get up to the next step (for example, 3.0 to 3.5).

Participation in appropriate tournaments:
Most well-organized tournaments are now built by levels. Sign up for the right one increases your experience and reduces inequalities.

Follow-up to progress:
Seeing you go up your rating is an excellent way to motivate and keep you in evolution.

Visibility if you are competitive player:
Organizers, coaches and representation agencies can consider you if your level is clearly identified.

How do you know your real rating?
